Things got off to a fast start in Wichita at the Intrust Bank Arena on Friday night with a very energetic crowd. Julian Dusseau came out swinging and punched his ticket finals with an excellent run that included two back flip combos and a score of 88.8. The six shooter stepped up next making it two for two with a Captain Morgan and a super flip and Dunne was headed to the finals aboard a 90.1. Keith Sayers helped us open the show and gave us a little insight into the young phenom that won best trick on his snowmobile, however “Say Yeah” didn’t put together the run he wanted and had to settle for an 80.1. Derek Burlew jetted onto the floor next but didn’t hit the Base Jump he set up and fell a little short of the finals with an 88.5. The final man in the first half was the “Redneck” Shawn Connors who came straight from the East Coast and still had a few cobwebs to shake out. He ran well but a dead sailor cost him and he was only able to post a 79.0.
After spending a few minutes with the newly minted X-Games Gold Medalist Heath Frisby we headed to the second half of qualifying. Rich Kearns finally got all the kinks worked out in his RM 250, throwing in a stripper and a cordova to post an 84.3. Drake McElroy strutted his stuff next and it looked like the picture perfect double grab he threw in was going to earn him a trip to the finals with 88.0. Dustin Nowak buckled down and powered thru a dislocated shoulder but came up just short of the finals. He didn’t make any excuses and gave the crowd props for making a ton of noise. “The Superman” himself Greg Hartman pinned it right out of the gate and was flawless from start to finish, posting a 90.9 for the top qualifying run. Two time winner on tour this year, Brody Wilson flipped a nac trick and an indy air to make the finals with a 90.0.
With the finals set we went to a crowd judged whip contest and the four riders in the mix were, Nicky Dunne, Drake McElroy, Derek Burlew and Brody Wilson. DB has dominated the whip off early in the season and he was feeling very confident as the other three contestants went for it. I don’t think Derek was ready for DMC to drop a massive whip nac on the crowd. Burlew showed the skid plate to the upper deck but it wasn’t enough because the fans were solidly in Big Mac’s corner.
There was a definite vibe in the air as the Alefs Harley Davidson finals kicked off. The “Flyin’ Frenchman” Julian Dusseau set the mark with an 88.0. “Bro D” was tapped next and he had a lot riding this finals. He had a chance to “turkey” the early part of the season by winning three in a row. He was solid thru and thru with only a little bobble on his last trick, a super flip, and posted a very impressive, 92.3. Mr. large and in charge, Greg Hartman didn’t want to go away quietly and hit the stratosphere on his first jump nailing a super flip and backed that up with another flip combo indy air. It was in the judges hands at that point and the Man who wears his Hart on his sleeve came up just 6 tenths short of a win as Brody Wilson completed the hat trick and hoisted the hardware!
Following our trophy presentation we had a first. Not just for us, but for anywhere as X-Games Gold Medalist Heath Frisby rocked a back flip on his sled between Keith Sayers and Nick Dunne flipping on their dirt bikes. It was unbelievable and the crowd stood for a full five minutes cheering!
