All Eyes on the Gravity Slashers in the Walleye’s House
Toledo, Ohio was the scene of the latest Gravity
Slasher escapades in the home of the Toledo Walleye’s hockey team, Lucas County
Arena. The action was much hotter than
the weather outside (is there any reason we can’t do a show where it is warm
this year?) and the Toledo
fans were the winners here. JJ Romans
wasn’t sure what this week would hold as his main competitor for the year was
out with injury. A fan favorite, Shawn
Connors crashed at home and broke his femur in two! He had a successful surgery and should be
back on the bike soon, but unfortunately, his run of Gravity Slashers wins has
come to an end for 2010. You can go to
Facebook under Gravity Slashers and wish Shawn well. JJ said it best when he admitted that Shawn
would be missed for the rest of the season.
This week also brought a new comer in the form of Ray Bennett. Watch this kid, I saw him for the first time
today and he did awesome to include making the finals!
Before the finals though, Ray showed his stuff in the crowd
judged Best Whip contest and won it in a close battle over multi-time winner,
Ben Veyna in a close heat. The Moto
Elimination award went to the Chi-Town Hustler, Jason Rowe who used his
signature Rowe-Dova to take that win and kick his competition to the curb. 50/50BMX.com turned it up tonight with huge
tricks seen on TV- not sure how those guys can take the physical abuse they do
and keep riding. Keith Weinland once
again proved why he was the 2006 Trials National Champion aboard his Gas-Gas
machine.
The finals were awesome with young Ray Bennett going
first. I don’t think he had planned to
do a final as he struggled to find tricks in the extra time allotted. Up next was the High Roller Ben Veyna who has
missed only one final all year, and that was due to a dislocated shoulder,
which popped mid air a couple weeks ago.
He took the Hotseat and kept it through Justin Stoltzfus run but was
knocked out when JJ Romans wowed the crowd (A free piece of Gravity Slashers
gear for the first one to post on Face Book the correct spelling for “wowed”)
with some Backflip variations and getting dialed on a Shaolin AND Dead Body-
two tricks which he had not done once in over three years. He earned the win tonight and I can’t wait to
see what these guys do tomorrow. You can
be there as seats are still available, but they are going quick- so hop to it!
