Quad Cities Goes Crazy for Gravity Slashers
02/26/10
Friday night and the house was packed! The Quad Cities area has been waiting for FMX for a long time and finally got it. Tonight’s show saw some great riding from the Gravity Slashers and JJ Romans was a double winner tonight as well.
The 50/50 BMX Stunt Team came out and with a nice concrete run in were skying higher than ever before on their bicycles. Many kids locally cannot wait for the snow and ice to go away so they can try some of the craziness they saw tonight. Keith Weinland made a full ten minute pull on his Gas-Gas trials machine and never put his feet down once- even while doing some serious aerial stunts and balance work on the ground.
FMX had three elements- Moto Elimination, Best Whip and of course FMX competition. Best Whip was a close one between Ben Veyna the High Roller from Las Vegas and the “Kid”, Ray Bennett. Ray lost the tag “New Guy” on his first weekend (a record time I think) and did it again tonight with a huge whip judged by the crowd to be the biggest of the night. It was all about color tonight, as in the Most Colorful Man in Freestyle-JJ Romans. He handily won the Moto Elimination with a buttery smooth Backflip over the 70 foot gap and then came out and stomped his Final run to beat out the likes of John Distler (yep- you read that right! The Old Dog can still play with the kids), Ben Veyna and top qualifier Justin Stoltzfus. His score of 93.7 beat his nearest competitor by a half point.
The riders felt good tonight but I think that if the crowd is as loud two nights straight, we may see some big things so get your tickets if you haven’t. I predict a full sell out! Post up on Facebook at Gravity Slashers with your pics, stories and questions and we will see you tomorrow night!
